First Japanese ever to win 2 medals in a track event at the world championships.
Known as “the little (but) grand hurdler”, Tamesue is ranked 5th in the world.
Tamesue with his height -170cm, which would not be described as advantageous, competes with the world’s top athletes on equal terms by using his unique techniques and extraordinary physical coordination.
At the 2001 Edmond World Championships, a bronze in the men’s 400 m hurdles made Tamesue the first Japanese medalist ever in a short distance track event at this level of competition.
In 2003 he left his comfortable life of corporate supported athlete and became a truly professional athlete, supporting himself with sponsorship and race earnings.
At 2004’s Athens Olympic Games, Tamesue only was able (which is still extraordinary for a Japanese track and field athlete) to reach the semifinals, but at the 2005 Helsinki World Championships, he achieved the bronze medal for the second time. With his top class ability and intellect, Tamesue attracts public attention and is one of most popular Japanese athletes that could possibly win in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
