After entering Hosei University, he showed outstanding performance in The 1500m, 5000m, and 10000m races and quickly became a leading athlete in college track and field.
He was the fastest runner the 1st section of the Hakone Ekiden in his freshman year, and became second in the 2nd section in his sophmore year. His “colored hair” and “sunglass” look attracted attention in the conservative college track and field world, gaining exposure through the race’s broadcast network, Nippon Television, and other media. He is nicknamed “Hunk Runner” and “Roaring Runner”. In his senior year, he ran the 2nd section of the Hakone Ekiden but hurt his leg after running 5.4 kilometers. His head coach tried to withdraw him immediately, but Tokumoto was not convinced in hope to hand over the team’s sash to the next runner. In the end he retired from the race, but his determination to finish his race moved many people’s hearts.
In 2003 and 2004, he won the 5000m race at the National Championships. He was caught in a slump with a knee surgery in 2005. In early 2006 he returned to racing and was selected to the national team for the Fukuoka World Cross Country Championships.
In 2007 he ran his first marathon at the Tokyo Marathon, becoming 5th.
In April of 2007 Tokumoto entered graduate school of Juntendo University, becoming the first long distance runner ever to study at graduate school.
