One of Japan’s most influential singer-songwriters. In 1992 she made her debut with “STOP MOTION”. In the same year her “DA KA RA” sold 1.1 million copies. In the following months and years, hit albums and singles such as “CHOTTO”, “NATSU GA KURU” and others each achieved sales of over 1 million. In 1996, Ohguro’s “ATSUKU NARE” became NHK’s Atlanta Olympic Games theme song, and she went on to receive the 10th Japan Golden Disk Grand Award “Best 5 artists of the year”. Ohguro was well and truly established as one of Japan’s top artists.
On December 31st 1999, TV Asahi held a huge special event featuring Ohguro, as a celebration of their 40th year in business. She performed live in the “5,000 million people all around the world watch! 1999~2000 Maki Ohguro live in Nara”. It was during this show, which was broadcast to 62 countries around the world, that Ohguro suddenly announced that she would take a break from her career, sending shockwaves all over the world.
After restarting her career in April 2001, she released three albums one after another before the end of that year: “NIJI O KOETE”, “YUKI GA FURU MAE NI” and “O”. “IDENTITY”, which was released in May 2002 became TBS Television’s theme song for the Soccer World Cup. In somewhat of a change, Ohguro began to throw lots of energy into live tours.
In 2004 She created the cover band “Ohguro Maki and Friends”, going back to their roots.
July 28th 2004 saw the release of Ohguro’s “SHINE & GROOVE” the cheerleading/supporting song for the Japanese Women’s hockey team for the Athens Olympic Games.
In 2006 She launches a 19-point nation-wide tour – “LIVE BOMB! LEVEL 5”.
