A leading gymnast in Japan, Yoneda started gymnastics at age 7 and won the all around (AA) individual event at the All-Japan Inter-Junior High School Championships.
While attending Seifu High School, he became second in AA individual at the All-Japan Inter-High School Meet.
He went on to Juntendo University where he came in second in AA individual at the All-Japan Inter-College Championships of 1997, became champion at the NHK Cup in AA individual of 1998. He also won the AA individual at the All-Japan Inter-College Championships of 1999 and the horizontal bar at the National Championships.
Although he was not selected for the Sydney Olympic team, in 2004 he lead the Athens Olympic men’s gymnastic team as captain and earned the team’s gold medal, the first in 28 years. In the individual events he also showed great performance, winning the bronze medal in horizontal bar. Currently he is training to be selected for the Beijing Olympic team.
